2014 Backyard Stories Semillon Sauvignon Blanc
Our first release of a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc under our Backyard banner. The outcome we aimed for is a finely structured Semillon dominant wine with a background of oak. We chose mostly one and two year old barrels to give a little 'old world' complexity as opposed a traditional clean, purely aromatic new world style. The wine was made in a very basic fashion; our best fruit relying on simplicity of execution during the winemaking.
COLOUR: Very pale straw-green.
AROMA: Complex, soft, bready and creamy oak impact over a fine lifted nettle Semillon with a nice lift of aromatic Sauvignon. Immediately engaging and different, offering complexity and intrigue.
PALATE: Structured and tight, flinty with very persistent fruit flavours leading to a dry tangy finish. Overall a complex and evocative dry white.
FOOD MATCH: Shortbreads at one end, cheddar on the other.
Will be interesting over time.
REGION: Margaret River
COMPOSITION: 70% Semillon, 30% Sauvignon Blanc
STANDARD DRINKS: 7.4
VINTAGE NOTES: The 2014 vintage follows a string of warm and dry vintages for the Margaret River region. A very fast vintage for whites broke with a cool change and reds followed with a reasonable pause in intake. As is fairly typical in Margaret River, we were then subjected to an extraordinary Indian summer which pushed the reds to just about perfect maturity.
The vintage will be fine and rich, fuller bodied whites with reds that are deeply coloured with terrific varietal flavour and fruit aromas; it could be a classic, time will tell.
